Eligibility
- A master's degree in the relevant discipline is essential for every post — a bachelor's degree is not sufficient anywhere in this examination.
- The master's must be of at least two years' duration after graduation, whether taken as an integrated course or separately.
- Candidates awaiting their result may apply, but must produce proof of passing within the window UPSC opens after the Main result.
- Age 21 to 32 years as on 1 January 2027 — born between 2 January 1995 and 1 January 2006.
- Nationality: India, Nepal, Bhutan, a Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1 January 1962, or a person of Indian origin who migrated from certain listed countries.
- 10 of the 127 vacancies are reserved for Persons with Benchmark Disability — 8 in the GSI posts and 2 in the CGWB posts.
- Candidates possessing a qualification that fits more than one stream must choose a single stream, either Geophysics or Geology/Hydrogeology, at the time of applying.
- The Commission describes the vacancy numbers as liable to alteration.
How to Apply
- Apply only at upsconline.nic.in. No other mode of submission is accepted.
- Create an account and generate your Universal Registration Number (URN). The URN is registered once in a lifetime and is reused for every UPSC examination.
- Complete the Common Application Form, then the examination-specific module, which is where the fee and centre are chosen.
- The form requires a live photograph captured on the spot in addition to your uploaded photo.
- For the signature, sign three times one below the other on plain white paper in black ink, then upload that image.
- Choose your centre early. Allotment is first-apply-first-allot and every centre except Chennai, Dispur, Kolkata and Ahmedabad has a cap that freezes once filled.
- Pay the ₹200 fee unless exempt, and submit before 6 PM on 22 September 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I correct my UPSC application after submitting it?
No. The notice is explicit that no correction, alteration or modification is allowed in any field after submission, and applications cannot be withdrawn. This is stricter than SSC, which does give a paid correction window — so check every field before you submit.
Do OBC and EWS candidates get a fee exemption?
No. Only women, SC, ST and Persons with Benchmark Disability are exempt. OBC and EWS candidates pay the full ₹200.
Is a bachelor's degree enough?
No. Every post in this examination requires a master's degree of at least two years in the discipline listed against that post.
Why should I apply early rather than on the last day?
Exam centres are allotted first-apply-first-allot, and most have a ceiling. Once a centre fills, it is frozen and later applicants have to pick from what is left.
Is there negative marking?
Yes, the notice states there is a penalty for wrong answers in the objective-type papers. The Preliminary papers are answered on an OMR sheet in black ball pen only.
