Eligibility
- Nationality: a citizen of India, or a subject of Nepal or Bhutan, or a Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1 January 1962, or a person of Indian origin who migrated from certain specified countries with the intention of permanently settling in India.
- A candidate may apply for one or both categories (GSI and CGWB posts) with a single application and a single fee.
- The examination has three stages: Preliminary (Objective), Main (Descriptive), and Personality Test/Interview. Only the Preliminary Examination is being applied for now.
- 8 vacancies in Category I and 2 in Category II are reserved for Persons with Benchmark Disability.
- Vacancy numbers are tentative and liable to change; appointments will initially be temporary.
How to Apply
- Apply online only at upsconline.nic.in before 22 September 2026, 18:00 Hours — no other mode is accepted.
- First-time applicants must create an account and generate a Universal Registration Number (URN), then complete the Common Application Form and the exam-specific module together with the fee.
- Pay the fee (₹200, waived for women, SC, ST and PwBD candidates) only via net banking, Visa/Master/RuPay card or UPI.
- Choose your preferred examination centre carefully — centres other than Chennai, Dispur, Kolkata and Ahmedabad have a capacity ceiling allotted on a first-apply-first-allot basis.
- No withdrawal, correction or addition is allowed after the application is submitted, apart from a one-time URN profile edit facility.
