GATE 2027 Syllabus & Paper Changes — New Robotics Paper, TF Merged into XE, All Codes Renumbered

IIT Madras (GATE 2027 Organising Institute), on behalf of the National Coordination Board, Ministry of Education · Post Date:

Short Information

GATE 2027 is not a repeat of last year's paper list. IIT Madras has revised the syllabi across the test papers, added Robotics & Automation as a thirtieth paper, and — the change that catches people out — converted Textile Engineering & Fibre Science from a standalone paper into a section of Engineering Sciences. Every sectional code in XE, XH and XL has also been renumbered from letters to a code such as XE0 or XH3. You need the paper code both at application and in the examination, so an old code carried over from a coaching list is a real risk.

Eligibility

  • The organising institute states plainly that the syllabi for the GATE 2027 test papers have been revised, and advises candidates to check the updated syllabi rather than reuse an older one.
  • Robotics & Automation (RA) is a new test paper. GATE 2027 is conducted for 30 test papers in total.
  • There is a separate note on the Biotechnology (BT) syllabus and on the Two-Paper Combinations — both have been updated for this cycle.
  • Textile Engineering & Fibre Science, which was the standalone paper TF, is marked 'Converted'. It now appears as XE9, an optional section inside Engineering Sciences.
  • XE sectional codes have moved from letters to numbers: A becomes XE0, B XE1, C XE2, D XE3, E XE4, F XE5, G XE6, H XE7, I XE8, and TF becomes XE9.
  • XH sectional codes have changed likewise: B1 becomes XH0, C1 XH1, C2 XH2, C3 XH3, C4 XH4, C5 XH5 and C6 XH6.
  • XL sectional codes have changed too: P becomes XL0, Q XL1, R XL2, S XL3, T XL4 and U XL5.
  • Every paper is for 100 marks. General Aptitude is common to all papers and carries 15 marks; the remaining 85 marks come from the paper's own syllabus.
  • All test papers are set in English.
  • A candidate may appear in one paper, or in up to two papers from the permitted two-paper combinations.
  • Registration through DigiLocker is mandatory for all Indian nationals — a verified DigiLocker account must be created or updated before applying.
  • GATE scores are valid for three years and are used for postgraduate and doctoral admission with possible financial assistance in Ministry-supported institutions, as well as for recruitment by several public sector undertakings.
  • There are no international centres for GATE 2027.
  • The organising institute marks all dates as liable to change.

How to Apply

  1. Before anything else, create or update a verified DigiLocker account. Registration is not possible without it if you are an Indian national.
  2. Look up your paper's current code on the official Test Papers & Syllabus page. Do not carry a code over from a GATE 2026 list — XE, XH and XL codes have all changed.
  3. If you were planning to write TF, note that it is no longer a standalone paper. You now apply for XE and take XE9 as one of your two optional sections.
  4. Download the revised syllabus for your paper by clicking the paper code on the official page. Check it against whatever material you have already been studying from.
  5. If you intend to write two papers, read the Two-Paper Combination page first — the permitted pairs have been updated for 2027.
  6. File only one application. If you want a second paper, add it to your original application rather than submitting a fresh one — multiple applications mean only one is accepted and the rest are rejected with no refund of the fee paid.
  7. Apply by 27 September 2026 to avoid the late fee; the window with a late fee closes on 5 October 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is new in GATE 2027?

A new test paper, Robotics & Automation (RA), taking the total to 30; revised syllabi across the test papers; updates to the Biotechnology syllabus and the Two-Paper Combinations; the conversion of Textile Engineering & Fibre Science into an XE section; and renumbered sectional codes in XE, XH and XL.

I wanted to write TF. Can I still?

Not as a standalone paper. Textile Engineering & Fibre Science is now XE9, an optional section within Engineering Sciences. You apply for XE and choose XE9 as one of your two optional sections.

Why do the sectional codes matter?

Because the paper code is required both when you apply and at the examination. XE, XH and XL codes have all moved from letters to the new numbering, so a code taken from a GATE 2026 list will be wrong.

How are marks split in a GATE paper?

Every paper totals 100 marks — General Aptitude is common to all papers at 15 marks, and the remaining 85 marks come from the paper's own syllabus.

Can I submit a second application for my second paper?

No. Add the second paper to your original application. If you file multiple applications only one is accepted and the rest are rejected, with no refund of the fee paid.

Is DigiLocker really compulsory?

Yes, for all Indian nationals. The organising institute requires a created or updated verified DigiLocker account for GATE 2027 registration.

Should I reuse last year's syllabus PDF?

No. IIT Madras states that the syllabi for the GATE 2027 test papers have been revised and advises candidates to check the updated syllabi, which are downloadable by clicking each paper code on the official page.
